In 2017, the Cuban Artists Fund will serve a Presenting Partner of Dance Cuba, a collection of film archives related to the production of Dance Cuba: Dreams of Flight produced by Cynthia Newport. The archive is rich in behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with famous dancers and choreographers.
Recently acquired by the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, Cynthia Newport’s dance cuba collection is both historically valuable and currently relevant and will serve as the basis for public programming for decades to come.
The public programming launches on April 8, 2017 with a screening of the feature film that is part of the collection and a following panel discussion. ‘A breathtakingly beautiful film by any standard’, dance cuba Dreams of Flight is a unique expression of Cuban culture in all its profound glory and complexity. Central figures include Carlos Acosta, Fernando Alonso and Alicia Alonso, Cuban-American Septime Webre, and others.
In keeping with the commitment to nurture meaningful dialogue at a pivotal time in the history of dance and Cuban and US relations, panel participants joining Newport include Fernando Saez, founder and Executive Director of the vibrant Malpaso; the National Ballet of Cuba’s principal ballerina Viengsay Valdes; NYTimes writer Brian Siebert.
The dance cuba collection encompasses a trove of rare material not incorporated into the core film. These resources will be brought forward in subsequent seminars, symposiums, exchange programs, research projects and unique performance presentations in Cuba and the US.
